Ipswich Maritime Trust: History and Key Milestones
Origins and Purpose
Ipswich Maritime Trust (IMT) was founded in 1982, emerging from the Maritime Ipswich Committee, which had organised a year‑long programme of events for the national Maritime England Initiative. From the outset, IMT focused on revitalising the Ipswich Wet Dock, producing a forward‑looking development plan and rallying local support for transforming the area. The modern Waterfront is a direct outcome of this long-term advocacy.
IMT continues to champion Ipswich’s maritime heritage through events, exhibitions, archives, education, and community partnerships.
