Barge Weekend and 25th Birthday Party, June 30th- July 6th

In conjunction with the Society for Sailing Barge Research, Richard Smith mounted an exhibition of Thames Barges in Suffolk at the Waterfront Centre. This was very well attended, as was our 25th Birthday Party on Thursday July 5th. Our thanks go to Alison Evans and Richard Thomas for the excellent refreshments and to Matthew Jones, Howard Ryan and David Smuk for serving the liquid refreshments.

We were delighted to welcome the Mayor of Ipswich who showed great interest in the maritime artefacts that the IMT had displayed in

the Centre. Part of the display provided by Peter Bendall. The vital importance of sails and rope was explained by displays contributed by Des Pawson, who also demonstrated rope making each day. Tony Osler's marine paintings sold well, earning the Trust a good commission.

Visit of the Discovery and IMT Exhibition August 8th – 13th

The exhibition mounted by the IMT and the visit of the Discovery replica, attracted over five thousand people to the waterfront. As well as the panels provided by the Suffolk Record Office, describing the conditions both on board ship and at Jamestown, there were displays relating to Ipswich’s more recent history. One of the sixteen photographs of Ipswich Dock, taken by Robert Burrows in the 1850s, that Stuart Grimwade had digitally restored. Visitors to the Discovery were impressed by the small size of the vessel. Two actors, performed the roles of original crew members, thus explaining details of the voyage.

This was one of our most successful events, raising £601 from donations and the profit from the sales of books, paintings, prints and

postcards. It was an opportunity to bring aspects of our maritime heritage to a wider audience. The IMT is extremely grateful to ABP, David

Stainer of IBC, the Suffolk Record Office, the Ipswich Institute and BMS Imaging for financing and printing the Burrows Photographs. From our own membership, we would like to thank the following for mounting

and manning the exhibition, Peter Bendall, Bob Fox, Stuart Grimwade, Geoff Hartgrove, Jeanette and Tony James, Tim Legget, Anthony

Osler, Alan Otterburn, William Patrick, Bob Pawsey, Liz and Des Pawson, Miles Robinson, Ian Self, Richard Smith and Fraser Yates. Copies of the Burrows photographs may be bought from BMS Imaging. Contact Roger  01473 601234, who will make a donation to the IMT for each print sold.
