In our first Wednesday of the month meeting, on 6th November, we are very excited to be hosting a screening of Oyster Land by East Anglian filmmaker Matthew Harrison.
“Oyster Land is a documentary about the oyster farmers of Mersea Island, Essex. Some of these oyster farmers are ninth generation, some are just starting out. This film aims to capture the winter atmosphere of working on the waters of the River Blackwater and Colne.
“In making this film, I wanted to explore the ancient oyster culture around Colchester, and to simply show the tough livelihoods of the oystermen working on the water. I’m thoroughly interested in our relationship to the land around us, and specifically how the oystermen of the Blackwater and Colne work in tandem with nature to sustain a local trade that spans back thousands of years.”
And at the same meeting, we will be announcing the winners of the Suffolk Writers Group maritime competition, in which members were invited to write a poem or prose inspired by one of three evocative images from the Ipswich Maritime Trust’s Image Archive.
Meet the winners, hear their entries, see the photos! 7.30pm at the Waterfront Building, University of Suffolk.
IMT members, Suffolk Writers Group members, and students: free. Others: £5 or join IMT on the night. Refreshments included.
